Benicia Theatre Group brings back “Blithe Spirit” for its 60th anniversary – Featured in The Vacaville Reporter

The Benicia Theatre Group is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a revival of Noël Coward’s timeless comedy, “Blithe Spirit.” The play, first staged by the BTG in 1983, is now being brought back to delight local audiences once more.

“Blithe Spirit” follows novelist Charles Condomine as he hosts a séance with the quirky medium Madame Arcati, leading to the unexpected return of the ghost of his deceased first wife, Elvira. The resulting series of supernatural and comedic events forms the heart of the play.

Kelsey Bye, a member of the BTG’s Board of Directors, sees a parallel between Elvira’s reappearance and the revival of the production. She considers it an opportunity to honor the group’s past work while introducing it to a new generation of theater enthusiasts.

The choice to stage “Blithe Spirit” reflects Coward’s talent for creating timeless situational comedies that resonate with audiences across generations. The play’s enduring appeal lies in its focus on the characters who breathe life into the narrative.

For Bye, who takes on the role of Elvira, this production marks her second collaboration with the BTG. As a newcomer to the stage, she is excited to embody such an ethereal and chaotic character. The rest of the cast, including Donna Turner as Madame Arcati, bring their own skills and energy to the production.

The BTG’s dedication to excellence is evident in the talented cast and crew, as well as in the technical aspects of the show. Special effects, lighting, and backstage wizardry enhance the audience’s experience, adding layers of excitement and intensity to the performance.

As the theater looks back on 60 years of memorable productions, Bye emphasizes the importance of attracting a younger audience. By engaging with new generations through platforms like Instagram, the BTG hopes to secure its legacy and continue its mission of bringing quality theater to the community.

Looking forward to showcasing “Blithe Spirit” in April, the cast is eager to share their passion and joy with audiences. The play promises to be a delightful mix of humor, supernatural elements, and stellar performances that will captivate theatergoers of all ages.
