Portsmouth welcomes the opening of the first health clinic owned by a Black transgender woman in the U.S.

A groundbreaking new Health clinic, known as the ETSI Health Clinic, is set to open its doors in downtown Portsmouth, Virginia. Founded and led by Nyonna Byers, the clinic is making history for two significant reasons. Not only will it be the first clinic in Portsmouth to offer direct care services of its kind, but it is also notable for being owned by the first Black transgender woman to own a health clinic in the United States.

The ETSI Health Clinic will provide a wide range of services, including free HIV and STI testing and treatment, mental health services, substance abuse services, and hormone therapy specifically tailored for the transgender community. Due to generous grants from Gilead Sciences and the Virginia Department of Health, all of these services will be provided at no cost to patients.

The clinic’s ultimate goal is to contribute to the end of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and it aims to achieve this through comprehensive education and accessible, inclusive care. Byers emphasized that the clinic is open to all and will not turn anyone away, operating as a one-stop shop for prevention, testing, and treatment.

The grand opening of the ETSI Health Clinic is set for Friday, with full public service beginning the following Monday. Stay tuned to WAVY.com for the latest updates on this significant development in healthcare.

This momentous achievement marks a significant step forward in providing inclusive and vital healthcare services in the Portsmouth community and beyond.
