When Laxman Narasimhan became the global CEO of Starbucks in October 2022, one of the requirements was for him to be trained as a barista. During a recent visit to his hometown of Pune, India, Narasimhan, 56, visited a Starbucks outlet and donned a green barista apron to serve up coffee to customers. In an interview, Narasimhan discussed his plans to ‘refound’ Starbucks and shared the company’s recent successes, including record revenues of $36 billion in 2023. He also spoke about the India market, emphasizing the country’s importance as a key growth area for Starbucks. Despite India’s traditional tea-drinking culture, Narasimhan believes there is potential for a shift towards coffee consumption, similar to what Starbucks achieved in China. He stressed the importance of building a sustainable and substantial Business in India, and touched on the company’s commitment to deliver a consistent and accessible experience for customers. While India is expected to be one of Starbucks’ faster growing markets, Narasimhan acknowledged that it is still on a relatively small base compared to the company’s international footprint of around 38,000 stores globally.
