Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is set to announce his running mate for his independent presidential bid, with Silicon Valley lawyer and investor Nicole Shanahan being a front-runner in the selection process. The formal announcement is scheduled to take place in Oakland, California, after an extensive search for a vice-presidential nominee that included discussions with various candidates.
Shanahan, 38, emerged as a favorite contender in Kennedy’s search, having been publicly supportive of his candidacy, including funding a Super Bowl ad. Other notable figures that were considered for the position included NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers, former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura, and former congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard.
Kennedy’s decision to run as an independent came after facing obstacles within the Democratic Party, which he accused of blocking his efforts to challenge President Biden in the primaries. Shanahan, who had initially expressed disappointment at Kennedy’s departure from the Democratic Party, eventually reconnected with his campaign early this year.
Kennedy, known for his environmental advocacy and promotion of anti-establishment views, has drawn attention for his skepticism towards vaccines and support for conspiracy theories. His candidacy has been viewed as a significant threat to President Biden’s re-Election, with concerns over potential voter diversion.
In a recent interview, Shanahan clarified her stance on vaccines, stating that she is not against vaccination but has concerns about vaccine-related injuries. She emphasized the need for understanding screening mechanisms to address these concerns.
Despite drawing support from a portion of voters, Kennedy’s candidacy has raised apprehensions among Democrats about its impact on the upcoming election. The Democratic Party has intensified efforts to counter Kennedy’s campaign, recognizing it as a challenge to President Biden’s re-election bid.
