Minnesota is currently facing a major storm that is expected to bring significant snowfall to much of the state. A winter storm warning is in effect for the Twin Cities through 4 a.m. Monday, with much of the rest of the state also under a similar warning. Sunday through Tuesday have been designated as NEXT Weather Alert days.
The heaviest snowfall is expected to occur in the afternoon and evening on Sunday, with snowfall rates reaching 1-to-2 inches per hour and gusts up to 40 mph. This heavy and wet snow will likely result in challenging travel conditions and difficulties with shoveling.
By midnight on Sunday, the metro area could see between 6 and 10 inches of snow, while areas to the north and west could see more than a foot. The North Shore is under a blizzard warning. Warm air moving in along Interstate 90 may turn the snow into rain in some areas but is not expected to impact the north and west parts of the state.
Travel is expected to be significantly impacted by the storm, with moderate impacts through the afternoon and early evening in the Twin Cities and high impact expected starting around 7 p.m. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has 800 snowplows ready statewide, with twice as many drivers on hand to keep the roads clear.
As the storm moves through, it is advised to stay updated on weather conditions and travel advisories. A high pressure system will bring calmer weather from Wednesday through Friday. Stay safe and prepared during this significant weather event.
