WCBDD secures grant to establish supportive technology studio, promoting independence

The Warren County Board of Developmental Disabilities (WCBDD) in Lebanon, OH has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities to create a Supportive Technology Studio. This studio will introduce smart technology to individuals with developmental disabilities, allowing them to live more independently and safely.

Superintendent Megan Manuel expressed gratitude for the grant, stating that it will provide the people they serve with the opportunity to experience assistive technology that could enhance their quality of life. The Supportive Technology Studio, set to be completed this summer, will feature innovative tools such as an iGuardStove, a smart washer and dryer, a medication dispenser, Amazon Alexa, a tablet for communication, and adaptive gaming equipment.

Kellie Hampton, WCBDD Remote Supports and Assistive Technology Coordinator, highlighted the importance of hands-on experience with technology in the studio to explore its possibilities. Visitors will have the chance to learn about the technology’s benefits and role in promoting independence.

For those unable to visit the studio, WCBDD plans to create “Go-Bags” containing portable assistive technology for individuals to trial at home. Additionally, the studio will serve as a training ground for individuals to practice using assistive technology before implementing it in their own homes.

Hampton emphasized the significance of exploring assistive technology and remote supports as alternatives to traditional Direct Support Professionals, in order to enhance autonomy, independence, and quality of life for individuals with disabilities.

As the Remote Supports and Assistive Technology Coordinator, Hampton brings a wealth of experience in special education and assistive technology. She is dedicated to identifying and obtaining tailored assistive technology solutions for individuals served by WCBDD.
