Israeli military seizes control of al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City amid clashes
The Israeli military has taken control of al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City in what it describes as an operation to thwart terrorist activity. Troops reportedly came under fire from the hospital buildings, resulting in 80 detentions and casualties, including individuals identified as “Hamas terrorists.” Witnesses have reported heavy exchange of gunfire near the hospital, where thousands of displaced individuals are seeking shelter.
The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza has accused Israel of committing a war crime by targeting the hospital. Israeli officials, however, state that medical staff and patients are not obligated to evacuate, and the hospital can continue essential operations. Despite this assurance, medical personnel within the hospital have reported that electricity has been cut, restricting their ability to provide necessary care to patients.
Dr. Amer Jedbeh, a surgical resident inside the hospital, described the challenging conditions, stating, “We are trapped in our department with limited resources due to the lack of electricity and water. Patients are suffering as a result of these limitations.” The situation has led to deaths of patients on life support due to interruptions in essential medical services.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claim that the raid on al-Shifa was prompted by intelligence indicating the presence of senior Hamas operatives using the hospital to plan attacks against Israel. However, Hamas and health officials deny these allegations. The IDF has called on all Hamas members within the hospital to surrender and emphasized that medical facilities should not be exploited for terrorist activities.
This incident is part of a series of clashes between Israel and Hamas that have resulted in significant casualties, including civilian deaths. Humanitarian organizations have expressed grave concern over the safety of patients and medical personnel amid ongoing violence in Gaza. International humanitarian law stipulates protections for hospitals during conflicts, but these protections may be forfeited if the facility is utilized for hostile purposes.
The seized control of al-Shifa hospital comes amidst a backdrop of continued hostilities between Israel and Hamas, underscoring the complex challenges faced by civilians caught in the crossfire of the conflict. The international community remains vigilant in monitoring the situation and advocating for the protection of civilian infrastructure in conflict zones.
