Explained: The Anti-Kremlin Armed Groups Making Claims on Russia’s Border Regions
In recent developments, three armed groups claiming to be Ukraine-based Russians – the Freedom of Russia Legion, Russian Volunteer Corps, and Siberian Battalion – have asserted launching incursions into Russia. These incursions reportedly occurred in the Belgorod and Kursk regions, with the groups engaging in battles there. Ukraine has stated that these attacks were carried out independently, separate from their operations.
The fighters, dressed in military fatigues and equipped with advanced weaponry and tanks, have stormed these regions, leading to clashes and tensions. Moscow has labeled these groups as “terrorist formations” and expressed concerns over their activities.
Freedom of Russia Legion
The FRL emerged in March 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with the purpose of uniting Russians to support the Ukrainian people against the Russian government. Claiming to be officially recognized by Ukraine, the group consists of former Russian servicemen and citizens who traveled to Ukraine through different countries. Notably, the FRL had previously taken responsibility for an attack in the Belgorod region last year.
Russian Volunteer Corps
Founded by far-right Russian national Denis Kapustin in August 2022, the RVC comprises Russian citizens fighting against their own country to support Ukraine. The group, not affiliated with the Ukrainian armed forces, relies on donations for support. The RVC’s primary objectives include restoring Ukraine’s territorial integrity and opposing the Russian government. Despite differing ideologies, the RVC pledged to collaborate with the Freedom of Russia Legion in the past.
Siberian Battalion
The Siberian Battalion, established in autumn 2023, represents a unit for Russian nationals aiming to combat the Kremlin. Comprising members from Siberia’s indigenous communities, the battalion expressed grievances over Russia’s treatment of indigenous cultures and their alleged unfair treatment during mobilizations.
These developments underscore the complexity of the geopolitical landscape in the region, with various armed groups operating against the Russian government. The motivations and backgrounds of these groups reflect deep-seated tensions and conflicts within Russian society.
