After experimenting with a lesser-known Sports betting app, Washington, D.C. is now partnering with a well-established industry leader to manage its betting operations. The Office of Lottery and Gaming has announced that D.C. bettors will soon have access to FanDuel, as the current contract holder shifts away from the subcontractor that operated the underperforming GambetDC.
The decision to team up with FanDuel is expected to significantly increase revenue, with estimates pointing towards a revenue boost of one-and-a-half to two times the current numbers. This strategic move comes after a period of underwhelming performance by GambetDC, which only saw $69.6 million in wagers compared to the $116.2 million wagered at the city’s sportsbooks.
Former D.C. Councilmember Jack Evans believes that diversifying the betting apps available in the District would have been a more lucrative approach compared to the exclusive use of GambetDC. With FanDuel poised to take over, Evans anticipates a positive impact on revenue, citing the substantial guarantees made by FanDuel upfront.
The shift to FanDuel also marks a potential renewal of the lottery contract held by Intralot, which was previously a no-bid contract. Mayor Muriel Bowser has indicated that the forthcoming contract will be open for competitive bids, signaling a new era in D.C.’s sports betting landscape.
Brian Vasile, owner of the Grand Central Restaurant, Bar, and Sportsbook in Adams Morgan, views the transition to FanDuel as a favorable development for both D.C. and local gamers. He believes that the move will attract a broader audience to the sports betting scene, potentially overcoming any negative perceptions associated with GambetDC.
As FanDuel prepares to take the reins, the company will also manage the betting kiosks in various restaurants and bars across the city. The anticipation surrounding this shift suggests a promising future for sports betting in Washington, D.C., as the city embraces a new chapter in its betting operations.
