Thousands rally in London demanding ceasefire in Gaza

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of central London, demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Organized by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), the march started at Hyde Park Corner and ended at the US Embassy in Nine Elms. This marked the 10th pro-Palestinian demonstration in London since Israel’s campaign in Gaza began following attacks by Hamas on Israel.

Among the demonstrators was singer Charlotte Church, who expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people and their suffering. Despite a large police presence, a few arrests were made during the event for public order offenses.

The march comes amidst concerns raised by the government’s counter-extremism commissioner about London becoming a “no-go zone for Jews” during weekend demonstrations. However, march organizer Ben Jamal dismissed these claims as “disgraceful,” emphasizing the peaceful nature of the protests.

Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and an all-female line-up of speakers were also present at the rally, coinciding with International Women’s Day. They voiced their opposition to the continued bombings in Gaza, which have led to a humanitarian crisis in the region.

The conflict in Gaza has resulted in thousands of casualties and has left over half a million people facing food insecurity. The United Nations has warned of an impending famine in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid.

Overall, the march in London reflects the global outcry for peace and justice in the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with people from all walks of life coming together to demand an end to the violence.
