Arizona Coyotes release Adam Ruzicka after video surfaces showing possible drug use

The Arizona Coyotes have made the decision to place forward Adam Ruzicka on unconditional waivers in order to terminate his contract following a controversial social media post. Ruzicka posted a video on his Instagram story that showed his face before revealing a credit card and a substance resembling cocaine, as reported by the Associated Press. Although the post has since been deleted, screen recordings of the video are still circulating.

Amidst the scrutiny surrounding Ruzicka, the Coyotes announced on Friday that the 24-year-old is being placed on waivers for termination purposes. He is in the final season of a two-year contract worth $1.525 million, having recently joined the team on Jan. 25 after being claimed off waivers from the Calgary Flames.

Despite playing three games as a Coyote, Ruzicka has yet to record any points. His previous stint with the Flames saw him notch nine points in 39 games. Since making his NHL debut in 2021, he has participated in 117 career games.

If Ruzicka clears waivers, his contract can be terminated, though the NHL Players’ Association has the option to file a grievance on his behalf within 60 days. This deadline could be extended, as was the case with Corey Perry when his contract was terminated by the Chicago Blackhawks earlier in the season.

The decision to release Ruzicka follows a similar move by the Coyotes to terminate forward Alex Galchenyuk’s contract after he was arrested for a hit-and-run and disorderly conduct. Galchenyuk, now playing in Russia, was released just 13 days after signing with the team. He later apologized to the police and entered the NHL/NHLPA assistance program.

The situation involving Ruzicka highlights the ongoing challenges faced by professional athletes in maintaining a positive public image, both on and off the ice. It serves as a reminder of the importance of conduct and responsibility in the world of Sports.
