A groundbreaking new scientific project led by the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB) is set to explore the potential benefits of nature-based Health therapies on mental health. This project, known as GreenME, aims to integrate these therapies, which involve frequent exposure to natural green spaces, into public health and nature promotion policies to enhance the mental well-being of the population and reduce disparities in addressing mental health issues.
With funding of almost 6 million euros from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program, GreenME will span across four years and involve 19 partners from various countries, including Spain, Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States, Poland, Sweden, Germany, and Belgium. The project recently commenced in Barcelona with over 60 members of the consortium coming together to kickstart the initiative.
Dr. Helen Cole, a researcher at ICTA-UAB and one of the scientific coordinators of the GreenME project, emphasized the importance of deepening the evidence supporting the benefits of nature-based therapies on mental health. The project will focus on empowering stakeholders and shaping sustainable health solutions that utilize contact with nature to improve people’s overall health and well-being.
Dr. Margarita Triguero-Mas, a researcher at the UOC and ISGlobal, highlighted the project’s aim to analyze the relationship between green care and mental health equity, translating this knowledge into effective policies. The researchers will investigate the effectiveness of nature-based health care interventions, which include activities such as horticulture, forest bathing, and other therapies designed to promote healing or enhance personal well-being.
In addition to exploring nature-based therapies, the project will also examine the role of daily contact with nature and nature-based health promotion in mental health and environmental justice. By advocating for equitable access to nature-based therapies and promoting a healthier planet, the GreenME project aims to contribute to creating sustainable and resilient communities.
The GreenME consortium, led by ICTA-UAB, is a collaborative effort involving several prestigious institutions from across Europe and the United States. Through this initiative, the consortium seeks to advance green care in Europe and expand nature-based therapies to improve mental health equity. The project’s ultimate goal is to enhance our understanding of the benefits of nature on health, ensure equal access to nature-based therapies, and advocate for a healthier planet for all.
