Wisconsin ethics commission refers Trump fundraising arm for prosecution

Wisconsin Ethics Regulators Recommend Felony Charges Against Trump Fundraising Arm

Ethics regulators in Wisconsin have recommended felony charges against Donald Trump’s fundraising arm and other Republicans in a scheme to circumvent campaign finance laws. The bipartisan regulators allege that the scheme was designed to take out a powerful GOP lawmaker who had turned against Trump.

The prosecution referrals were made public on Friday, adding to the legal troubles facing the former president, who already faces numerous charges in other jurisdictions. The Wisconsin Ethics Commission found probable cause that Trump’s Save America committee and several state and local Republican officials committed felonies. They recommended that several district attorneys investigate and prosecute them.

The investigation by the commission focused on the 2022 primary race between Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and political newcomer Adam Steen, who had the support of Trump. The commission alleges that campaign finance laws were sidestepped by having donors give money to county Republican parties, which then funneled it to Steen’s campaign.

Save America donated $15,000 to three county parties in Wisconsin as part of the scheme. The ethics commission, comprised of three Republicans and three Democrats, has the authority to refer the case to the Attorney General if district attorneys do not take action within 60 days.

The Trump campaign has not yet responded to requests for comment on the matter.

Historically, campaign finance violations have been a contentious issue in American Politics, with both Democrats and Republicans facing scrutiny over their fundraising practices. The recommendations for felony charges in Wisconsin add to the ongoing debate over the influence of money in politics and the need for transparency and accountability in campaign financing.

Overall, the case highlights the importance of upholding campaign finance laws and ensuring that all political entities operate within the bounds of the law to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
