Biden attributes Ukrainian withdrawal of key town to ‘congressional inaction’ in call with Zelensky

President Joe Biden, on a call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, linked Ukraine’s withdrawal from Avdiivka to the lack of congressional aid in their efforts to fend off Russia’s invasion. This decision has raised concerns about the US’s reliability as an ally. Biden emphasized the urgent need for Congress to pass a national security supplemental funding bill to resupply Ukrainian forces.

The withdrawal from Avdiivka, a key town in the contested battles on the eastern front, has sparked renewed urgency to pass additional funds for Ukraine, especially in light of the passing of Kremlin critic Alexey Navalny. Biden expressed his disappointment, calling it “unethical” that the US is not providing more aid to the Ukrainian people after their brave fight.

The Senate passed a $95.3 billion foreign aid bill to support Ukraine, but GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson has stalled the bill’s progress, leaving Ukrainian forces in a critical position. As Russian gains in the war raise concerns, the National Security Council spokesperson stressed the importance of timely aid to provide Ukraine with the resources needed to defend their country.

Vice President Kamala Harris also urged Congress to pass additional aid for Ukraine and criticized House Republicans for stalling legislation. Both Harris and Zelensky emphasized the significance of standing with an ally in the face of unprovoked aggression.

Zelensky conveyed the importance of the aid package, expressing confidence in the United States’ support. However, he hinted at the House being on recess until the end of the month, raising concerns about the delay in providing crucial aid.

The withdrawal from Avdiivka marks a significant gain for Moscow since it captured the city of Bakhmut last year, further intensifying the pressure on Ukraine’s eastern front. The situation remains dynamic, with additional developments expected.

This story highlights the delicate balance of power and the need for timely aid in global conflicts. The historical context of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia adds complexity to the current situation, making it crucial for the US to fulfill its commitments to its allies. As the global community watches these events unfold, the reliability of the US as a strategic partner is under scrutiny.
