Theo James joins cast as legacy costumes are revealed in ‘X-Men ’97’ trailer premiere

After over 30 years, the X-Men are making their return. X-Men: The Animated Series first aired in 1992 and quickly turned Marvel’s mutants into household names. Now, in 2024, the beloved characters Cyclops, Storm, Wolverine, Jean, and more are coming back to TV in a new series called X-Men ’97. The highly anticipated teaser trailer for the show has been released by Marvel Studios, and it is set to premiere on Disney+ on March 20.

The show is a direct sequel to X-Men: The Animated Series, picking up after the events of the finale, “Graduation Day,” which left fans wondering what happened next. The new series will see the X-Men facing a world that has changed drastically, with Magneto now leading the team and Charles Xavier gone.

The core gang will return in their classic legacy costumes, which showrunner Beau DeMayo says will serve a specific purpose and offer viewers a nostalgic nod to the past. The costumes are meant to throw the X-Men back to a time when things seemed simpler, but also to make them question if they were just more naive back then.

In addition to the return of the original voice actors from X-Men: The Animated Series, some new actors have joined the cast, including Theo James in a secret fan-favorite role.

The new series will also feature some recastings, with Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Lawrence Bayne, and Alyson Court taking on new roles. DeMayo explains that the recastings were made for a variety of reasons, from authentic representation to vocal intonations.

As for the overall message of X-Men ’97, DeMayo teases that it will revolve around the idea of empathy and will explore what it truly means to be an X-Men in a world that is constantly changing.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the premiere of X-Men ’97, looking forward to reuniting with their favorite mutants and discovering what new adventures await them. Stay tuned for the return of the X-Men and the continuing legacy of this iconic superhero team.
