Nashville, TN Business Advocates for Restricting Property Tax Increases

Legislation making its way through the Tennessee State Capitol is seeking to impose a cap on property tax increases by local governments without public input. The bill, HB0565/SB0171, aims to limit property tax hikes to 2% without the need for a public referendum.

Renowned pitmaster and Business owner Carey Bringle, known for his restaurant Peg Leg Porker, has expressed his support for the legislation. Bringle has been vocal about his opposition to Nashville’s 34% property tax increase in 2020, which he believes has had negative repercussions on independent businesses in the area.

Bringle highlighted the impact of steep property tax increases on small, independent businesses, noting that many have been forced to leave downtown Nashville due to rising tax rates. He shared his own experience, revealing that his property taxes have surged by around 800% since purchasing his building in The Gulch in 2012.

The proposed legislation comes in the wake of significant property tax hikes in various counties, such as Sumner and Rutherford, further amplifying concerns about the financial burdens faced by both businesses and residents.

Bringle emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility in government spending, suggesting that citizens are willing to pay their fair share of taxes as long as funds are utilized wisely. However, he cautioned that continued tax increases could prompt the closure of longstanding businesses and the influx of outside companies in Nashville.

Additionally, a poll conducted by the Beacon Center found that 67% of respondents would support a property tax cap without the need for a referendum, reflecting a widespread desire for limitations on local property tax increases.

Historically, Tennessee has been one of the few states without a specific limit on local property tax increases, making the proposed legislation a significant development in addressing tax concerns at the local level.
