Latest News on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

NFL luminaries from across the league gathered at the Resorts World Theater in Las Vegas on Thursday for the highly-anticipated NFL Honors show, a traditional event that precedes the Super Bowl. At the event, prestigious awards such as Most Valuable Player, Coach of the Year, and Walter Payton Man of the Year were handed out to deserving recipients.

Among the attendees were Baker Mayfield and his wife Emily, as the Buccaneers’ quarterback was in the running for one of the night’s major awards. Although the Comeback Player of the Year honors for the 2023 season went to Browns quarterback Joe Flacco, Mayfield received significant recognition in the voting process.

Out of the 49 Associated Press voters who determined the winner, 10 placed Mayfield as their first choice. Bills safety Damar Hamlin received the most first-place votes with 21, while Flacco garnered 13. Additionally, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa received four votes, and Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy each received one.

Overall, Mayfield appeared on 33 of the 49 ballots, receiving 10 second-place votes and 13 third-place votes. This amounted to a final point total of 93 for Mayfield under the scoring system.

In addition to Mayfield, four other players and coaches from the Bucs’ 2023 squad received votes for awards. Notably, outside linebacker Yaya Diaby, a third-round pick in 2023, received a single first-place vote for Defensive Rookie of the Year, as well as a third-place selection, totaling six points. Defensive lineman Calijah Kancey also received a third-place vote.

Head Coach Todd Bowles and former Offensive Coordinator Dave Canales, now the Carolina Panthers’ head coach, also received votes. Bowles was among the candidates to receive votes for Coach of the Year, and Canales was mentioned for Assistant Coach of the Year.

These results showcase the talent and recognition of the Buccaneers and their players and coaches within the NFL community, further solidifying their position as significant contributors to the league.
