Janelle Monáe Makes a Bold Fashion Statement at 2024 NFL Honors
Janelle Monáe turned heads with her bold and unique fashion choice at the 2024 NFL Honors in Las Vegas last week. The actor and singer, who uses the pronouns “she” and “they,” arrived in a stunning circular dress designed by Tony Ward, featuring striking black, white, silver, and purple stripes. Paired with black open-toe stiletto heels and a Betty Boop-style pixie cut, Monáe’s look was eye-catching and unconventional.
Ward’s website describes the dress as “a statement mini black dress with a voluminous circular pattern of black and silver sequins embroideries innovatively stitched together on a tulle base to wrap the allure.” However, some fans and media outlets likened the look to a rug, a CD, or even a piano.
The NFL Honors is an annual event that celebrates the best plays and players from the concluding season. This year, the event saw Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud named “Offensive Rookie of the Year,” Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson honored as the NFL’s MVP for 2023, and Kevin Stefanski of the Cleveland Browns taking home the “Coach of the Year” award.
As one of the presenters at the ceremony, Monáe herself had a successful week, with her most recent album, “The Age of Pleasure,” receiving two Grammy Award nominations.
Monáe has been open about their fashion choices, citing her young niece, Jorgie, as her ultimate style inspiration. Speaking to People last year, Monáe explained, “She’s confident and free. She puts together clothes and they don’t have to match. They don’t have to be in the same genre. And she’s so happy. That’s what I think clothing is about. I don’t need to be uncomfortable.”
Monáe’s love for black-and-white ensembles also has a practical origin. “A lot of my fashion came from just not having enough money for things,” she explained. “As I was performing, I couldn’t have a new look every performance. So I would just go to thrift stores and I would buy black, two dollar trousers or tuxedo pants and have them tailored to fit my body.”
Monáe’s bold fashion statement at the NFL Honors continues to solidify her reputation as a trailblazer in both fashion and music. Her willingness to push boundaries and challenge traditional norms makes her a unique and influential figure in the Entertainment industry.
