Ferguson, Mo. is experiencing a resurgence in prosperity, with a noticeable uptick in the number of businesses opening up in the heart of the city. Mayor Ella Jones has expressed her excitement about this growth, particularly along South Florissant Road where 19 new businesses have opened in the last two years.
This economic boom is a stark contrast to the state of South Florissant Road in previous years, which Mayor Jones described as a “mess.” Now, the area boasts a variety of new establishments, including Yummie’s, the Hive, Cathy’s Kitchen, and Elicious, highlighting the diverse offerings available to the community.
One of the new Business owners, Juanita Thompson, opened Yummie Nutrition and Blend Boutique at the beginning of January, attracting a packed crowd to her grand opening. As a Black female business owner, Thompson is proud to set an example for others and provide a space for Health, Wellness, and community engagement.
With businesses booming in Ferguson, Mayor Jones emphasizes the importance of supporting local establishments to keep the city’s economic momentum going. The city’s revitalization serves as a testament to its ability to attract and retain businesses, contributing to the overall growth and prosperity of the community.
Ferguson’s history is marked by racial tensions and civil unrest, particularly in the aftermath of the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed Black teenager, by a white police officer. The subsequent protests and demonstrations drew national attention and sparked conversations about racial inequality and police brutality.
Despite this difficult period, the city has made significant strides towards healing and progress, exemplified by the current economic revitalization and community empowerment. The success of entrepreneurs like Juanita Thompson reflects the resilience and determination of Ferguson residents to create a thriving and inclusive environment for all.
As businesses continue to flourish and vacancies become scarce in Ferguson, the message is clear: the city is open for business, and the community’s support is crucial in sustaining this positive momentum.
