The author, Rob Csernyik, discusses his experience as a new Business owner. After years of planning and hard work, Rob hoped that Boxing Day in 2013 would change his financial outlook as the owner of a home decor store, Habitat in Cornwall, Ont.
The day turned out to be disappointing, as the shoppers mostly went to chain stores or the local mall. Rob struggled with the financial pressures of owning a boutique store, and learned that not all business owners share the same sense of urgency. Many factors contribute to the success of entrepreneurs, such as inherited wealth, privileged backgrounds, and connections.
Despite his best efforts, Rob’s store barely lasted 15 months before he had to close it down. Looking back, he realizes that more open discussions about the challenges and inequalities of entrepreneurship could have better prepared him for the realities he faced. Moving forward, he believes that the focus should shift from cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset to addressing the hurdles and disparities that can affect the success of business owners.
