Ryan Murphy’s latest addition to his anthology of juicy scandals, “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans,” dives into the betrayal of high-society friends by author Truman Capote. This FX series portrays the fallout from Capote’s decision to reveal the secrets of his elite friends in a novel excerpt. The sumptuous production, with a stellar cast including Diane Lane, Calista Flockhart, Chloë Sevigny, and Naomi Watts, revels in the secrets while documenting the tragic consequences of Capote’s actions. The show presents a murky take on the characters involved, remaining more agnostic than judgmental. It tries to reproduce Capote’s contradictory feelings for his friends, showing both admiration and loathing for the elite circles that rejected his mother. However, the show’s pursuit may be seen as a broadside against the delicate work of maintaining social relationships rather than a clash between a conflicted truth-teller and the upper crust.
The show also aims to explore the fate of Capote’s unfinished magnum opus, “Answered Prayers,” raising questions about the absence of the author’s greatest work. This eight-episode series premieres on FX and FXX on January 31 and will be available for streaming on Hulu the next day, with subsequent episodes airing weekly. In addition, the show is an adaptation of Laurence Leamer’s book, “Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era,” adding a layer of historic background and context to the captivating tale.
