China Vows to Address Disorderly Competition in Electric Vehicle Sector
In a recent announcement, Xin Guobin, vice-minister of industry and information technology in China, stated that the country is committed to resolving issues related to “disorderly competition” and “blind” expansion in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. This comes as China continues to be a dominant player in the global EV market, having sold 9.5 million EVs last year. Despite this success, Xin highlighted the challenge of “insufficient consumer demand” for EVs externally.
In response to these concerns, China plans to implement “forceful measures” to address the blind construction of new EV projects by certain local authorities and enterprises. This move signifies China’s determination to regulate the rapid growth of the EV industry within its borders.
However, China has also faced scrutiny from international bodies, such as the European Union, which launched an anti-dumping investigation into China’s EV industry amid concerns of overcapacity and the potential flooding of domestic markets with cheap cars.
Xin criticized the actions of some countries and territories, accusing them of engaging in trade protectionism through the abuse of trade dispute mechanisms. These accusations reflect the ongoing tensions in the global trade landscape, particularly in the automotive sector.
