Boston Public Schools has announced a groundbreaking new jobs pipeline partnership with Massachusetts’ largest Health care system, thanks to the largest donation in the district’s history. This transformative partnership, set to be unveiled at Massachusetts General Hospital’s Museum of Medical History and Innovation, will support career-connected learning and offer unparalleled opportunities for students.
The $250 million donation from Bloomberg Philanthropies will benefit Boston and nine other communities, with a focus on creating new high schools or investing in existing ones that will directly feed into the health care industry. The aim is to address the need for skilled healthcare workers and strengthen the middle-class workforce.
Mayor Michelle Wu and Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper are spearheading this initiative, with a focus on collaboration between Mass General Brigham and the Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers. This college prep and vocational school, with campuses in the Longwood Medical Area and Roxbury, will play a crucial role in preparing students for careers in the rapidly growing health care industry.
Michael Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg Philanthropies, emphasized the significance of combining traditional classroom learning with practical experience to prepare students for successful careers in high-growth industries. Each school receiving funding will provide instruction in health care from employees within the health care system, offering students opportunities for job shadowing and paid internships.
Anne Klibanski, President and CEO of Mass General Brigham, expressed gratitude for the transformational support from Bloomberg Philanthropies. This expansion is expected to have a tremendous impact on the current and future workforce as well as the surrounding community.
This partnership marks a historic moment for Boston Public Schools, as it paves the way for a new approach to education and workforce development. By bridging the gap between academia and industry, this initiative will contribute to the growth and advancement of the healthcare workforce and the overall well-being of the community.
