Boston is in for a wintry, snowy day Tuesday as the WBZ-TV Weather Team has issued a NEXT Weather Alert. This comes after a relatively mild January that saw only one day with below average temperatures through the first 14 days. Boston is currently experiencing the fifth warmest January to date on record, with the exception of one snowstorm back on January 7th.
Massachusetts is about to face a significant temperature drop over the next 7-to-10 days, bringing an end to the above-average temperature streak. Along with the cold, a storm system passing to the south of New England is expected to bring some snow on Monday night and during the day on Tuesday. While the storm won’t be as powerful as previous ones, it will create wintry conditions in parts of the area.
Starting Tuesday, there may be some light snow or flurries after midnight, with accumulations expected to be fairly light across the area. This includes nothing-to-one inch over Cape Cod, the Islands, and the Plymouth County coastline; one-to-2 inches inland in Plymouth County up through Boston and Cape Ann; and two-to-4 inches in areas west of Interstate 95.
Looking ahead, another storm system may impact the area on Friday, though it may not bring significant snowfall. It’s still several days away, and further updates will be provided in the next 24-to-48 hours.
Historically, long stretches of mild temperatures in January are relatively uncommon in Boston, making this year’s record-breaking warm spell particularly notable. While the recent mild weather may have been a welcome change for some, the imminent return of colder temperatures and snow highlights the unpredictability of New England’s winter weather.
