A tragic hot air balloon crash in Eloy, Arizona, claimed the lives of four people on Sunday morning, with a fifth person in critical condition, according to the Eloy police department. The balloon went down in the desert area of Sunshine Boulevard and Hannah Road at around 7:50 a.m. The passengers and the pilot were killed, with the balloon also carrying eight skydivers who were able to jump to safety before the crash.
The cause of the crash remains unknown, and the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have taken over the investigation. The victims have been identified as Chayton Wiescholek, Kaitlynn Bartom, Atahan Kiliccote, and the pilot, Cornelius Van Der Walt. Another passenger, Valerie Stutterheim, remains in critical condition.
