Three people tragically lost their lives in a small plane crash in western Massachusetts, near the border of Greenfield and Leyden. The crash occurred in the Leyden Wildlife Management Area, about two hours outside of Boston. The area is currently blocked off as investigators work to access the crash site.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation into the crash, which involved a Beachfront Baron plane. Experts will be looking into potential mechanical issues, pilot error, and external factors such as weather conditions. Unfortunately, the lack of on-board flight recorders on smaller planes can make investigations more challenging.
In 2019, small planes for personal or business transport were involved in 1,220 crashes, resulting in the deaths of 233 individuals. This is in stark contrast to the 40 crashes involving commercial air carriers, which led to just two fatalities. It’s clear that small plane crashes are more common and often more lethal.
As of now, the victims of the Greenfield plane crash have not been identified. Anyone who witnessed the crash or has surveillance video is urged to contact the NTSB at witness@ntsb.gov.
This tragic event serves as a reminder of the risks associated with small plane travel, and the importance of thorough safety measures and investigations to prevent future tragedies. Our thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time.
