NBC Chicago reports that several health systems are reinstating requirements.

Several Chicago-area hospitals have reinstated mask policies in response to a surge in respiratory viruses, including COVID-19, influenza, and RSV, as well as new recommendations from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). The policies come as the state experiences an uptick in hospitalizations for COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses.

IDPH recently issued guidance urging healthcare facilities to require masks in patient care areas, particularly when caring for immunocompromised individuals. Dr. Sameer Vohra, Director of IDPH, emphasized the importance of reducing the spread of respiratory viruses to protect patients, staff, and visitors.

In response to this guidance, several hospital systems, encompassing over 20 hospitals and numerous medical facilities, have implemented mask mandates. Endeavor Health, which includes NorthShore University HealthSystem, Northwest Community Healthcare, Swedish Hospital, and Edward-Elmhurst Health, updated its masking policy to require patients and visitors with respiratory symptoms to wear masks. Cook County Health also mandated masks for staff, patients, and visitors at Stroger Hospital and Provident Hospital.

Advocate Health Care implemented a limited-visitor policy and required masks in high-risk patient care areas at its 11 hospitals across the Chicago area. Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox also updated its visitor policy due to increasing respiratory illnesses in the community.

Furthermore, additional health systems, including Ascension and OSF Health Care, have also mandated masks at their respective hospitals.

The resurgence of respiratory viruses has prompted these proactive measures to protect the health and safety of patients, visitors, and healthcare workers. These developments highlight the ongoing efforts to mitigate the impact of respiratory illnesses in the Chicago area.

Historically, Chicago has faced periods of increased respiratory illnesses during the winter months, making it crucial for healthcare facilities to implement measures to prevent the spread of viruses. The recent implementation of mask mandates and visitor policies reflects the healthcare community’s commitment to prioritizing public health and safety.

As the situation continues to evolve, it is essential for individuals to adhere to the recommended safety protocols and stay informed about the latest developments in respiratory illness prevention. This proactive approach is vital in safeguarding the well-being of the community during these challenging times.
