Bahamas-Bound Cruise Trip Diverted to Boston, Maine and Canada Due to Weather
Imagine preparing for a sunny, sandy Caribbean vacation, only to find out you’re headed to cold New England and Canada instead. That’s the reality that passengers aboard the MSC Meraviglia cruise ship faced when their holiday dreams were dashed by last-minute itinerary changes.
Originally set to depart from New York for the Bahamas, the cruise was rerouted due to “unseasonable and rapidly worsening weather.” MSC Cruises explained that the weather would have made it impossible to safely reach the southern Atlantic Ocean from New York City.
Passengers were given the option to sail to the new stops or cancel for future cruise credit. The new schedule had the cruise departing from New York City on Dec. 16, with stops in Boston, Portland, Maine, and Canada, before returning to New York on Saturday.
The sudden change left guests scrambling to repack for winter cold instead of tropical heat. Videos shared by passenger Lakeya Allen on TikTok showed kids swimming in an outdoor deck pool on the ship in chilly New York weather.
Despite the unexpected change, Allen described the ship as “beautiful” and shared videos of her enjoyment of the indoor pool, jacuzzi, casino, and dining options on board. The unexpected turn of events may have thrown a wrench in their vacation plans, but passengers were determined to make the most of their new, albeit chilly, adventure.
