Tension surged Sunday between supporters of Palestine and participants in a march organized by the Jewish Federation of St. Louis in solidarity with Israel and in demand of the return of hostages being held by Hamas, a Palestinian militant organization. An estimated 400-500 people took part in the march which closed off Delmar Boulevard in University City between 1-2 p.m. About 30 pro-Palestinian demonstrators also marched alongside the main group, chanting slogans and carrying signs. The marchers sang the U.S. national anthem before starting their march, while a pro-Palestinian demonstrator recited the number of Palestinian children that had been killed. The Gaza death toll has now surpassed 17,700, around two-thirds of them women and children. During this time, protesters chanted to bring the hostages home. The demonstration aimed to stop anti-semitism and demand the release of the hostages. There have been similar demonstrations as the process continues.
