A Texas man, Shane James, has been charged with two counts of capital murder after a series of violent attacks that left six people dead and two police officers wounded. The attacks occurred in Austin and San Antonio, Texas, and were carried out by James in a daylong trail of violence. His parents, Phyllis James, 55, and Shane James Sr., 56, were found dead in their home in the San Antonio area, and four more people were found dead in two homes in Austin, more than 80 miles away. In addition to the fatalities, a cyclist in Austin was shot and wounded, and two police officers are recovering from gunshots, including one who was shot in the leg outside of a high school.
James, a former U.S. Army infantry officer who served from February 2013 to August 2015, has a history of mental Health problems and was previously arrested on charges of assaulting family members. He was arrested in January 2022 on similar charges and cut off his ankle monitor upon release, leading to a probation violation warrant. Despite concerns about his mental Health, James was not arrested during a previous incident when he barricaded himself in a bedroom at his parents’ home.
