CNN reports that the Biden administration has approved the transfer of over 1,000 500-pound bombs and over 1,000 small-diameter bombs to Israel, despite US concerns over the country’s actions in the war in Gaza. This authorization of munitions occurred before an Israeli strike on a humanitarian convoy in Gaza that resulted in the deaths of aid workers from the organization World Central Kitchen.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged that the aid workers were unintentionally targeted in the strike, which has led to international condemnation and calls for restrictions on US military aid to Israel. The approval for the transfer of weaponry came after numerous aid workers had already been killed in the ongoing conflict.
The US government has indicated that it has no plans to limit or condition military aid to Israel despite criticism from some officials, including President Joe Biden, over Israel’s protection of civilians in the war. The Biden administration is also preparing to approve an $18 billion sale of F-15 fighter jets to Israel.
Historically, the US has maintained a longstanding commitment to Israel’s security and defense capabilities. According to US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the weapons being transferred to Israel are intended for self-defense, deterrence, and replenishment of Israel’s military stocks.
The conflict in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of more than 32,000 people since October, with Israel declaring war on Hamas in response to a terror attack. The US has continued to support Israel with arms sales and transfers, reflecting the close relationship between the two countries.
