Manu Tuilagi to leave Sale Sharks and sign with Bayonne at the end of the season

England center Manu Tuilagi is set to leave Sale Sharks at the end of the season, signaling a likely end to his international career. The 32-year-old will be joining French Top 14 club Bayonne after signing a two-year contract, which means he will no longer be eligible for England selection due to playing overseas.

Tuilagi has been a significant player for England, earning 60 caps since his debut in 2011 and scoring 20 tries. He has represented his country in three World Cups and also played for the British and Irish Lions. Known for his powerhouse playing style, Tuilagi’s physical presence on the field has been crucial for England, especially in notable victories like the one against New Zealand in 2012.

Despite his contributions, injuries have plagued Tuilagi’s career, with a hamstring injury keeping him out of the 2015 Rugby World Cup and limiting his game time in subsequent tournaments. His move to France follows a trend of English players heading to the French leagues, with fellow teammates like Owen Farrell and Lewis Ludlam making similar moves.

At the club level, Tuilagi has enjoyed success with Leicester Tigers before joining Sale Sharks in 2020. While at Sale, he helped the team reach their first Premiership final in 17 years, although they ultimately lost to Saracens. With the arrival of Fiji captain Waisea Nayacalevu at Sale next season, Tuilagi’s departure became inevitable.

Alex Sanderson, Sale’s director of rugby, acknowledged the impact Tuilagi’s departure will have on the team, both on and off the field. While his presence will be missed, Tuilagi’s legacy as a key player for England and his contributions to the sport will be remembered.

Historically, Tuilagi’s career has been marked by both triumphs and challenges, showcasing resilience and determination in the face of adversity. His move to Bayonne represents a new chapter in his rugby journey, one that will see him continue to make an impact in the sport he loves.
