Welsh Open Snooker: Dominic Dale and Luca Brecel Reach Last Eight
Welsh snooker player Dominic Dale and world champion Luca Brecel have advanced to the last eight of the Welsh Open. Brecel defeated England’s Tom Ford 4-1, while Dale, the last remaining home player, triumphed over Jak Jones with a score of 4-0.
Northern Irishman Mark Allen and five-time Welsh Open winner John Higgins also secured their spots in the quarter-finals. Allen had a convincing 4-0 win over Robbie Williams, while Higgins faced a tense final-frame decider against Matthew Selt.
Meanwhile, Gary Wilson, who defeated defending champion Robert Milkins 4-0, will meet Anthony McGill in the quarter-finals, and Martin O’Donnell will face Brecel after beating Marco Fu 4-2. Dale’s last eight opponent is Elliot Slesser, who emerged victorious with a break of 129 and went on to win 4-3.
Dale’s impressive performance at the tournament has marked a return to form for the 52-year-old, who expressed his renewed sense of confidence after beating 17-year-old Stan Moody earlier in the competition. Jones, on the other hand, set up a meeting with Dale after beating Hossein Vafaei 4-2. Another Welshman, Daniel Wells, was unable to secure a spot in the last 16.
Brecel’s recent wins indicate a possible return to form for the snooker player, following a challenging period of results. Last year, Brecel achieved a surprise victory at the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield.
The Welsh Open, held at Venue Cymru in Llandudno, has a rich history in the world of snooker. The tournament has seen various champions over the years, including Dominic Dale, who won the Grand Prix in 1997 and the Shanghai Masters in 2007.
The upcoming quarter-finals at the Welsh Open promise to be thrilling, with top players set to battle it out for a place in the semi-finals. Snooker enthusiasts can catch all the action live on BBC TV, BBC iPlayer, BBC Red Button, and online.
