Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has spoken out against critics of Jordan Henderson’s move from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq to join Ajax. Henderson, 33, only joined Al-Ettifaq in July and signed a three-year deal, but his departure after just 17 league appearances has stirred up controversy.
Klopp defended Henderson’s decision, saying, “It looks like he’s happy, and that’s the most important thing to me.”
Henderson had previously expressed his intention to “help causes and communities” upon joining Al-Ettifaq, but reports have suggested that he failed to settle in Saudi Arabia.
Addressing the criticism of Henderson’s move, Klopp stated, “I don’t know how we dare to judge these kind of things. We have one life, and sometimes the decisions are perfect in the first place and sometimes they change. He was there and it was 100% an interesting experience.”
Klopp also expressed his support for Henderson’s new venture with Ajax, noting the club’s history of combining talent with experience to play “the best football.”
Liverpool are currently without Mohamed Salah, who is at the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt. Klopp stated that Salah’s injury during their match against Ghana is being assessed and further evaluation is needed.
As a historic note, Henderson had won eight major trophies with Liverpool, including the Premier League title in 2020. His move to Ajax marks a new chapter in his career, and Klopp expressed his happiness for Henderson and his family as they embark on this new journey.
