Currently, HCA Healthcare hospitals in the Tampa Bay region have approximately 600 open positions for registered nurses. Nurses from across the Southeast United States gathered in Tampa to rally for fair contracts and improved resources. Two unions, The National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC) and The National Nurses United (NNU), are representing the HCA Healthcare registered nurses in their call for better working conditions.
The nurses claim that HCA is prioritizing profits over patient care, intentionally short-staffing to maximize financial gains at the expense of patient well-being. Marissa Lee, an RN at HCA Florida Osceola Regional Medical Center, expressed concern about the impact of HCA’s practices on the healthcare industry as a whole.
Valerie Jean, a nurse at HCA, highlighted the everyday impact of staffing issues, citing unsafe conditions. In response, the HCA Healthcare West Florida Division defended its care quality and cited numerous quality achievements from Healthgrades.
New contract negotiations are set to begin in the new year. The rally in Tampa brought attention to the ongoing challenges faced by nurses in the HCA Healthcare system and the importance of addressing these issues for the well-being of both healthcare workers and patients. This demonstration underscores the broader conversation about working conditions and patient care within the healthcare industry.
