A federal court case involving a transgender girl has begun in Florida, as her mother tearfully testified about the potential need to move away from her Navy officer husband in order to obtain Health care for her daughter if the state’s ban on gender dysphoria treatments for minors is allowed to take effect. The girl’s mother, identified as Jane Doe to protect her child’s identity, shared that her daughter’s transition to living as a girl about eight years ago led to her becoming a successful, straight-A student. However, with the impending puberty, the family fears the girl will start turning into a boy without treatment. The trial challenges the ban on medical treatment for transgender children, including hormone therapy and puberty blockers, which was pushed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis.
The lawsuit also contests restrictions on adult trans care and highlights Florida as one of at least 22 states to enact laws restricting or banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors. The trial is expected to last five days, with a judge temporary blocking enforcement of the law pending the trial’s outcome.
