Jefferson Hills Healthcare and Rehabilitation, the nursing home that abruptly shut down on Friday, is attributing its closure to a cyberattack and strict enforcement by the state. However, there is some positive news for the employees who were not being paid as Southwestern Nursing and Rehabilitation has hired over 20 former employees from Jefferson Hills.
The state Health department mandated the closure of Jefferson Hills on Friday due to patients being in “immediate jeopardy” as a result of inadequate staffing. Anita Coffey from WeCare at Penn nursing home expressed sympathy for the sudden closure, stating that forewarning would have been beneficial for all involved.
Southwestern Nursing and Rehabilitation has welcomed former Jefferson Hills employees with gratitude for their dedication to their residents during a challenging time. They are also committed to ensuring a smooth transition for the residents they have accepted.
Furthermore, most of the patients from Jefferson Hills are now residing at Kane nursing home locations in McKeesport and Ross Township, with others placed in Southwestern or alternative facilities.
In a statement released online, Jefferson Hills Healthcare and Rehabilitation attributed their closure to a cyberattack on a payment clearinghouse owned by United Healthcare, which severely impacted their cash flow. They also cited ongoing fines and restrictions from the state health department as contributing to their financial difficulties. Despite the challenges faced, they express gratitude to the community, healthcare partners, and employees for their support.
