St. Louis Park’s Historic Walker Lake District Experiences Revitalization
Resident and Business owner Curt Rahman has witnessed the transformation of St. Louis Park’s Historic Walker Lake district over the past 35 years. Once a desolate area, the district is now bustling with activity, attracting both residents and visitors.
Located in the Lenox neighborhood, the Historic Walker Lake district has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. Originally established as an industrial hub along the Minneapolis and St. Louis railways by lumber businessman T.B. Walker, the district thrived until the economic crash of 1893. Subsequent developments, such as the removal of the streetcar and the rise of strip malls, led to a decline in the district’s prosperity.
In recent years, efforts have been made to revitalize the area. In 2018, the city of St. Louis Park implemented a revitalization plan based on feedback from business owners. The plan included rezoning the district to allow for more flexibility in land use, as well as improvements to infrastructure and buildings.
The revitalization efforts have paid off, with over 100 new businesses now calling the Historic Walker Lake district home. From restaurants to fitness studios to clothing stores, the district offers a diverse range of options for visitors.
Notable new additions to the area include Sota Clothing, a brand known for its Minnesota pride, and The Block, a dog-friendly pub opened by Craft & Crew Hospitality. These businesses have thrived in the district, thanks to its young demographic and lower property costs compared to Minneapolis.
With construction of Metro Transit’s Green Line light-rail extension stations expected to be completed by 2027, the future looks bright for the Historic Walker Lake district. Business owner Curt Rahman, who has invested in the area since 1996, remains optimistic about the district’s growth and potential.
As St. Louis Park’s original commercial center experiences a resurgence, residents and business owners alike are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. The Historic Walker Lake district is alive with activity and promises a bright future for the community.
