Paula Abdul Sues Former “American Idol” Producer for Sexual Assault
Award-winning singer and former “American Idol” judge Paula Abdul has filed a lawsuit against former “American Idol” producer Nigel Lythgoe for sexual assault, as reported by Rolling Stone.
The lawsuit alleges that Lythgoe sexually assaulted Abdul on two separate occasions. The first incident occurred in an elevator of a hotel where they were both staying during one of the show’s early seasons. The second incident reportedly took place at Lythgoe’s home in 2014 while Abdul was hosting “So You Think You Can Dance,” another show produced by Lythgoe.
Abdul stated in the lawsuit that she did not speak out at the time of the incidents because she feared retaliation.
Representatives for Lythgoe and “American Idol” have not yet responded to requests for comment.
Paula Abdul’s career as a singer and choreographer has been widely celebrated. She first rose to fame in the 1980s as a highly successful choreographer for artists such as Janet Jackson and then went on to achieve great success as a solo artist with hits like “Straight Up” and “Forever Your Girl.” Her work on “American Idol” further solidified her status as a respected figure in the music industry.
The allegations against Lythgoe come at a time when the entertainment industry is grappling with issues of sexual harassment and assault. The lawsuit filed by Abdul sheds light on the importance of speaking out against such behavior, even in the face of fear.
The case is ongoing and will be closely watched as it unfolds.
