Popular movies winning awards improve 2024 Oscars ratings

The Oscars viewership saw a significant increase this year, with 19.5 million people tuning in to watch the show, the highest since 2020. This comes after a period of declining viewership, with the pandemic-flavored telecast in 2021 only attracting 9.85 million viewers, a 58 percent drop from the previous year.

One of the possible reasons for the increase in viewership could be the popularity of the films nominated for the awards. Hits like “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” collectively made nearly $2.5 billion at the global box office, while films like “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things” also performed well financially.

The Academy has been trying to address the issue of declining viewership for some time now. In the past, popular films like “Dunkirk” and “Inception” have received best picture nods, but the majority of the movies celebrated at the Oscars are not very popular with the average moviegoer.

Efforts to attract more viewers, such as expanding the number of best picture nods and introducing a popular film category, have been met with backlash and ultimately retracted. However, it seems that the public is ready to embrace awards shows again, as seen by the increased viewership of other shows like the Golden Globes and the Grammy Awards.

While the Oscars saw a rise in viewership for the third year in a row, the challenges facing the movie industry, including the rise of streaming services, remain. It remains to be seen whether the Academy can sustain this upward trend in viewership and continue to attract audiences in the future.
